Responding
to a statewide need to make advanced education more accessible to
students in rural areas, The University of Alabama, College of Continuing
Studies' Division of Distance Education, in cooperation with the
Alabama State Department of Education, developed a mobile classroom
capable of delivering quality coursework to the student's hometown.
The Distance Education Mobile Classroom is a converted 11 foot wide,
36 foot long motor coach equipped with state-of-the-art videoconferencing,
and videotape technology, as well as a cellular phone and a fax
machine.
Through four interactive television monitors and a camera, professors
lecturing a class on the UA campus will be able to see, communicate,
and interact with students aboard the mobile unit. The unit will
hold up to 15 students at a time and is expected to be on the road
between rural sites four to five days per week. High school, undergraduate,
and graduate students can complete course work through satellite,
videoconferencing, written correspondence, and videotape instruction.
For more information on the Distance Education Mobile Classroom,
contact the Division of Distance Education at 205-348-9278 or 1-800-452-5971,
